A Disappointing Return for Sade
REVIEW - Sade – Soldier of Love
June 16, 2010 – There’s always been an understated value to everything that Sade does and sameness to her entire repertoire. That quality of old wine has served the singer/band well… until now. Unlike Norah Jones who has, at least, tried to mix-up-the-pot, Sade really needs to stop wearing the same dress to every party. MORE

Everyone with a Product Needs To Be Extremely Visible During the Holidays
October 26, 2011 – What’s worse than having a great product? Having a great product that no one knows about. Really, this happens to so many musicians and business people a like. Each year I see this marketing mistake play out with truly unbelievable talented musicians. I see great music projects fall by the wayside because marketing was not a priority.

In my 30 years in radio the term “Music-Marketing-Morning Show” has been, first, drilled into my brain by great programming mentors and later I was doing the drilling because I saw the light. There are formulas that are tried and true – I have found this to be an invaluable truth to success.

Even if you take away the fact that this is a structure for the radio business it’s easy to see why marketing is the key tool to anyone’s success. Many years ago Paul McCartney said that the greatest acts of all time were never discovered because they gave up. He pointed out that because they fell through the cracks, the right person didn’t hear them. As a musician, author or, even, pillow-maker your job is as much about creating your product as it is about making sure that the right people hear about it. I know I’m overstating the obvious but why is it that so many talented people forget about marketing and advertising?

I think, unconsciously many musicians and creators fall in love with their own projects and that love blinds them. They are so proud of the new creation that they expect it to sell itself. I can understand that but, really, it’s also ridiculous.

To carry on with McCartney’s statement I will say that some of my favorite artists are not that well known. It’s not because they don’t fit into the current-can of meat-wearing-sensationalists, it’s because they used every cent they had to produce an album and had no money left over to even get it out of their house.

It’s funny when I was learning to print as a kid my grade two teacher in Montreal always told me, “Respect the little letters that you are printing , do the best you can and then go show everyone, as many people as possible.” It’s interesting that I never forgot that lesson because it’s a truth of life. DO A GREAT JOB AND THEN SHOW IT OFF. The history of music is filled with mediocrity, insipid crap that should have never seen the light of day but some of these nimrods were smart enough to show it to everyone, to create a buzz, to sell it.

The Christmas season is right around the corner. It’s the ideal time to be seen and to not, as McCartney said, “fall through the cracks.”

If Christmas is a season of bright colors then be the best peacock you can be. If you have created something that could make people stop in their tracks then finish your project. It’s not really completed until you put that creation in the right hands.

I’m not asking you to contact the nearest payola radio station and pay-for-airplay. Trust me the industry and fans alike know who those site owners are. Never disrespect your creation. Find the people that truly get what you’re doing. They will get it in the right hands.
