Katie Melua Breaks off Ties with T-Bone Burnett and Settles With William Orbit On New Album
May 18, 2010 – It’s not often that ones calling card includes firing T-Bone Burnett. Katie Melua had hired the famous musician/producer for her latest album “The House” but things just didn’t gel.

Mike Batt, chairman of Melua's label Dramatico and one of her co-writers says, "They had a great time, but by the time we had gone through the process, it was just that this wasn't going to be the right time for these people at this moment for this album. There is a direction that they both want to go when they do work together, but this wasn't it."

So, in came William Orbit out of self-imposed retirement to produce the project. The technical wizard known for his work with Robbie Williams and Madonna and his New Age “Strange Cargo” projects quickly bonded with Melua. “The whole thing has been really exciting,” says the singer,  “It was the same feeling I had the first time I went skydiving. I was really quite nervous, but I knew all I had to do was let myself go and it was going to feel amazing. I wasn’t trying to get away from anything. It was more about going towards something. I wanted the music to be inspired by the future, something unknown that’s never been heard before, but at the same time hold on to the values of the music of the past, to try and tap into something that’s so ancient and old that its kind of forgotten. I thought that, if we went far enough in both directions, we could end up in the same place.”

Melua says the plan all along was to slowly change the sound on each album. Even though “The House”(her 4th studio album) is still categories as “Acoustic/Jazz/Blues”

Melua has sold more than ten million albums but hasn’t crossed over as well in North America, "I've got a feeling that this is the one that could break [her] in the U.S.” says Batt.

Katie Melua’s Close Brush with Death
June 17, 2009 – Katie Melua is counting her blessings. The young singer came so close to death recently that the whole experience has given her nightmares. One night while on tour in New York City she fell asleep while checking out the Manhattan skyline and almost fell 70 feet to her death. This is not one of those, maybe she would have died stories, it would have been all over.

Melua explains, “I had a near miss with death on a hotel balcony in New York after having had too little sleep, where you think you’re dreaming and you can fly.”

Her management said, “Katie had been on a tour of America, travelling around, just her and her guitar. She was at a party, had a few drinks and was very tired.
'Outside on the balcony she was sitting on the railing. She’d had too little sleep and was dreaming but unfortunately this was while she was on the railing.”

Luckily a fan saved her life after noticing the impending accident from a combination of alcohol, deep sleep and her slumping in the wrong direction. Let’s hope that fan gets free concert tickets for life. – by John Beaudin
