A Disappointing Return for Sade
REVIEW - Sade – Soldier of Love
June 16, 2010 – There’s always been an understated value to everything that Sade does and sameness to her entire repertoire. That quality of old wine has served the singer/band well… until now. Unlike Norah Jones who has, at least, tried to mix-up-the-pot, Sade really needs to stop wearing the same dress to every party. MORE

Gene Simmons Floored by New Singer & Debates Bob Lefsetz     Bookmark and Share
March 17, 2009 – While doing a stint as a keynote speaker at the Canadian Music Week event last week Gene Simmons of Kiss met a 19 year old singer (Sara Haze) in the lobby and he was floored. He also went for the jugular concerning Bob Lefsetz and issued the following statement on his site;

"Met a 19-year-old talent in the lobby of the hotel in the middle of the night, in front of 50 onlookers. She started singing acapella...and I was floored. (see video below.) We are looking into this young talent and before we announce her name, we will see where this goes.

"Meantime, the press (some good, ethical journalists, and others who simply rabble rouse) were there in droves. As is my wont, I respond in kind to courteous people and have no problem crucifying those who believe they can hide behind their blogs (and their mommy's skirts). One case in particular had to be punished [referring to his debate with Bob Lefsetz, who is described one of the music industry's most influential online analysts — Ed.]. In front of an audience....because he wanted this, and apparently liked it. Not to worry, anytime he wants more public flogging, he knows where to come to. Plenty more where that came from."

Paul Stanley’s Art Gets More Props    Bookmark and Share
March 5, 2009 – The guys in Kiss can never be accused of being one-trick-ponies. Gene Simmons has become a bona-fide TV star with his reality show and Paul Stanley’s art receives praise and sales.

Stanley told Rolling Stone Magazine, "I see people at the gallery who will never go to a KISS show and people at a KISS show that will never go to the gallery. And then there are some people in between," The Kiss singer specializes in bright large acrylics. In 2007 alone his art fetched $2 million and his Kiss partner Simmons even bought a piece.

He told Insite that his muse was a big break-up, "About six or seven years ago I was getting divorced and I really, like many people in that position, had a lot going on and a lot that maybe needed to get released. A friend of mine, my best friend, said that I needed to paint and my having never really applied myself to painting, somehow that connected with me and I went out and bought canvasses and paints and brushes and all kinds of other supplies and just decided to throw caution to the wind. The only thing that I was clear on from the get-go was that I wasn't interested in making a flower pot look like a flower pot. I was more interested in painting a reality that didn't necessarily have to be a literal or visual depiction of something so I wanted to approach it more of a stream of consciousness, where perhaps instead of using words I was using colors and textures to put my emotions, or what was going on inside me, on canvas. It was purely a relief and, I guess, cathartic therapy for me that once other people started seeing clearly connected with them." – by Kari Graham

Gene Simmons Wants to Be Your Guru: 'What I Do Isn't Taught”
March 2, 2009 – You can’t keep a good tongue down. Gene Simmons could be the next Wayne Dyer. The Kiss rocker does talk sense when it comes to making it, not only in music, but in life in general. On his website he posted, 'What I do isn't taught. I had to create myself.' Simmons, easily one of music’s top entrepreneurs, believes in hard work and determination at any cost. Here is what he posted after appearing as a keynote speaker at the ‘Leadership in Music’ conference in Nashville.

"No one taught me what I know. I had to go out there, dig and scratch and scrounge up the bits and pieces of 'the puzzle.' And, it's never easy. The tendency for people in power is not to have much time to show the ropes to up-and-comers. And, whenever I see new talent, or an ambitious young person, I always try to take time to sit, listen and then comment, critique, advise, offer some access when applicable. Because to become an entrepreneur, you must create your own business model, do your own research, fund it yourself and ultimately do it yourself. And this is not something you can learn in school. What I do isn't taught. I had to create myself. From top to bottom." – by Kari Graham

Bruce Springsteen Inspired by Kiss? Pass the Makeup
Feb. 5, 2009 – In what dimension does Bruce Springsteen steal a tune from Kiss. Even on the worse acid trip proceeded by snorting Rod Blagojevich’s rotting brain would have better results. Could Springsteen have actually ripped off Kiss? Is it illegal to even mention both in the same breath?

A YouTube internet poster named kstreetshuffle did a little investigation on Springsteen’s new tune ‘Outlaw Pete,’ comparing it to Kiss’ 1979 disco hit ‘I Was Made For Loving You.’ You know what? They actually sound a little bit a like. Though not in the same league as the Joe Satriani/Coldplay dispute where both songs sound exactly the same, the Kiss situation leads one to think that maybe Springsteen unconsciously picked up some Kiss inspiration. The similarity seemed minor to all of us at the Rock History Book office however.

Kstreetshuffle even did a remix of both songs and you judge for yourself. Kiss Army members are giving their painted heroes the win on this one, trying to make it ok to hate Springsteen – good luck with that. Check out the video below. – by John Beaudin

Kiss Considering Return to Their Roots on New Album
Nov. 18, 2008 – Kiss is looking at returning to their seventies roots if they ever get around to recording a new album. Paul Stanley told Classicrockmagazine.com that he originally wanted to stick to singing the old hits and being a heritage band but has had a change of heart. "I thought that I'd be content for Kiss to remain a heritage act," he says, "just playing our greatest hits – 'Detroit Rock City' and all that. But the new Kiss line-up with Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer is proving to be so good, so strong in spirit, it would interesting to see how we perform in the studio."

Kiss has been busy touring and plan to add more dates in North American and Europe but studio work will have to be sandwidged in there someplace. Stanley says, "If we were to go into the studio the intention would be to make a Kiss album in the style of our '70s recordings. A classic Kiss album, unmistakably.” Classic to a point with no plans on either original drummer Peter Criss or guitarist Ace Frehley rejoining the band. – by John Beaudin
