Where's My Teeth? - Grammy’s Make Me Feel Old     Bookmark and Share
Dec. 5, 2008 – I remember when the Grammy’s meant something to me. When I actually cheered in front of the TV when someone, I cared about, won a trophy. Last year I endured a pretentious Alicia Keys singing with a very dead Frank Sinatra and Beyonce, who I barely consider an actual musician, trying to make the Tina Turner tribute all about her. Sure, Rock’n’Roll has always been about egos, inflated and rude, but to me it’s now about celebrity over what their business cards should read – musician! Is Ashlee Simpson really a musician or Britney? Hell, I’ve never considered Madonna a musician. Just seeing her wearing a top hat and strumming a guitar on her new tour always makes me laugh out loud. Yeah right, Madge, you holding that guitar changes everything. Half the new artists on the radio today would have to enroll in the School of Rock for a dozen years just to qualify for the “I Think My Ballad Just Shit Itself” category. Don’t get me started on the Jonas Brothers being nominated.

How about the good news from the Grammy’s. Good on Coldplay, didn’t love ‘Viva La Vida” but I liked it a whole bunch. Seven Nods isn’t bad. Some people think Robert Plant needs to be re-programmed after spending so much time with Alison Krauss but the pair are nominated for ‘Album of the Year’ for “Raising Sand.”  They also have a well deserved nomination for ‘Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals’ for “Rich Woman.”  James Taylor is up for ‘Best Male Pop Vocal Performance’ for “Wichita Lineman,” the old Glen Campbell hit written by Jimmy Webb. Props to James for not screwing up such a tender melancholy gem. His “Covers” album is also up for ‘Best Pop Vocal Album.’

The Eagles grabbed a few nominations, most notably, ‘Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals’ for arguably the best song from ‘Long Road Out of Eden,’ ‘Waiting In The Weeds.’ It’s the tune that solidified that the paired down quartet was still indeed the Eagles. “I Dreamed There Was No War” is also up for ‘Best Pop Instrumental Performance’ and a well deserved “Long Road” is up for ‘Best Pop Vocal Album.’

Promise me something please? If Celine Dion or Alicia Keys sing with any dead musicians at next years Grammy’s, you have my permission to kick their ass'! – by John Beaudin
