Jack Bruce Received Death Threats After Dissing Led Zeppelin July 29, 2009 – Jack Bruce has found out the hard way that it’s usually not a good idea to talk-crap on the biggest Rock band of all time. Last year, after the Classic Rock Awards he told a reporter that Zeppelin was “lame.” As a result he received death threats.
“Everybody talks about Led Zeppelin. They did one f’kin gig – one f’kin lame gig – while Cream did weeks of gigs.” He said, “Proper gigs, not just a lame gig like Zeppelin did, with all the vocal keys lowered and everything.
“F’k off, Zeppelin, you’re crap. You’ve always been crap and you’ll never be anything else. Cream is ten times the band Led Zeppelin is.”
Bruce said he was just fooling around, yeah right. Does it sound like he was fooling around?
This week Bruce added, “It was just a bit of fun and it was blown out of all proportion.
We always used to have a pop at other bands in the old days, and that was all it was.
Some Led Zeppelin fans were really angry. I had a few death threats – they’re not likely to find me though!”
I guess Bruce won’t be fooling around any more. More
Avril Lavigne to Mellow out on New AlbumBut Will She Be Nice? July 29, 2009 – If there ever was a bratty singer it’s Avril Lavigne. She’s been accused multiple times of not appreciating her fans. In fact the famous war between Lavigne and Hilary Duff was started when the former Disney princess accused Lavigne of not caring for her fans. Some might say, “what fans?” since Lavgine’s last tour was plagued with her losing her voice and terrible tickets sales. Lavigne also had a war with famous blogger Perez Hilton. He did give Lavigne a few words in his blog this week, asking if “anyone would care” that she is returning.
Though the Duff-war was never taken seriously because, after all, it’s hard to take Hilary Duff seriously for anything musical, Hilton did make things difficult for Lavigne. In an entertainment world where perception is everything, Perez did profile Lavigne as an angry talentless has-been. It didn’t help that he has millions more fans than she does and instead of ignoring the bloggers attacks the singer launched her own site to counter attack Perez – it didn’t work and made her look even more petty.
In June 2007, one of Lavigne’s songwriters Chantal Kreviazuk, spoke disparagingly about her ability and ethics, later she took it all back. Did the lawyers get involved? A month before songwriters James Gangwer and Tommy Dunbar sued Lavigne over the tune “Girlfriend.” If it was plagiarized we will never know because six months later the pair signed a confidential settlement and said "we are satisfied that any similarities between the two songs resulted from Avril and Luke's use of certain common and widely used lyrics". Well that was convenient. More
Michael Jackson’s Doc Should Be Getting Really Nervous July 29, 2009 – According to multiple sources ranging from the Associated Press to TMZ, Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson’s personal physician gave the singer the powerful anesthetic Diprivan before he died.
TMZ is saying that the Doctor actually told the police he administered the drug in an interview two days after Jackson died. The online magazine suggests that either the Doc wasn’t paying attention or fell asleep or he simply left the room when Jackson’s heart stopped. Interestingly there was no EKG machine or pulse oximeter found in Jackson's home. These are the machines usually used to monitor the pulse of a patient being administered Propofol (also known as Diprivan).
Murray could be in some very serious trouble. More than just being the man who “killed Michael Jackson” he could be charged with manslaughter. The Los Angeles Times are reporting that Murray is in fact part of a manslaughter investigation. No charges have been filed yet. Some sources are also saying that one, possibly two; woman took boxes out of Murray storage locker right after Jackson died. More
Tony Bennett The Nicest Legend On the Road Today July 28. 2009 – I’ve been lucky. I haven’t met a lot of dorks in the music world, not artists anyway. Most of the jack-asses were actually radio people who had inflated views of their own self importance. In music the diva’s, with me anyway, were the small bit players.
I’ve heard the rumors of tough interviews with David Lee Roth, Marilyn Manson and of course Billy Bob Thornton but other than a few small-timers who went all ego-tastic on me i've had none of it in thirty years in broadcasting!
Probably the nicest performer I’ve ever met, the most appreciative and humble person was Tony Bennett. If you experienced this man in concert you know what I mean. Almost every word he says is wrapped in this thankful deep knowing that he has chosen well. If you haven’t found what you’re looking for in life then just watch old Tony.
When a music superstar asks you backstage “how was the show? Was it ok?” It’s really a what-duh-moment. Was it ok? It was one of the best shows I’ve ever experienced is what it was. “I’m never too sure how it sounds from your end” he continued. It’s not that he wasn’t sure of himself, he, even after all these years in the business, still wanted and invited feedback. More
Former Foreigner Lead Singer Lou Gramm Says His Old Band Sabotaged Him July 24, 2009 – There are so many Classic Rock bands on the road without their original lead singers. Even though their replacements are often younger and have better vocal range it’s just not the same. I won’t see Journey without Steve Perry or Styx without Dennis DeYoung, same thing with Foreigner. Is it really Foreigner without the guy who sang every one of their hits? That guy is Lou Gramm and he’s still mad at his old band or specifically its leader Mick Jones.
Gramm says he grew disenchanted with Foreigner after their sound took a turn to sucky Rock ballads, "I enjoyed the occasional keyboard song - I liked Cold as Ice, I thought Waiting for a Girl was a terrific song and I thought I Want to Know What Live Is was a terrific song,” he told DJ Paul Anthony. "But I think the perception of the band was we were turning into a ballads band, and nothing could be further from the truth, certainly from my perspective. But I'll be a son of a gun if, next album, Mick didn't have another soft wispy ballad that he wanted to push as the first single, called I Don't Want To Live Without You.”
Gramm adds, "By then I was very dissatisfied. I could see in the creative stages that most of the time and effort was put towards finding that certain ballad, and the rock songs were almost an afterthought. I could see that change in front of my eyes. I was fighting it, first personally with him. Then when the band started taking flak for not being the rock band we used to be, I had to state my case that it wasn't a choice I'd have made. That's when I broke off and had my first solo album - to let the world know I just wanna rock." More
Alison Krauss Quiet on Second Duo Album with Robert Plant July 24, 2009 – It’s hard to tell where Alison Krauss and Robert Plant are at on their next studio album. In typical fashion he isn’t talking but Krauss has given a few hints on their follow up to “Raising Sand” which won some Grammy’s and sold 2.5 million copies.
Again, it’s produced by T-Bone Burnett and according to Krauss, "Will be different, as if we hadn't made the first" she said, "I love being in the world of the unknown.”
Last January Krauss said that the project was in the pre-production phase.
Meanwhile Krauss is also recording an album with her band Union Station. More
Alice in Chains Try to Convince Fans of Life After Layne Staley July 24, 2009 – Does Alice in Chains have legs without Layne Staley? He’s a hard act to follow. Though his last years with the band, before he died in 2002, were not considered his best work, by far, Staley remains one of the most charismatic, powerful figures in the Seattle grunge scene.
Now Alice in Chains is set to release their first album in 14 years, “Black Gives Way to Blue” on September 29.
Guitarist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney were at Virgin Records in New York unveiling the project on Tuesday.
Cantrell told MTV news, "There are songs about our relationships with each other, there are songs about my brother, there are songs I wrote for my dog, there are songs Layne wrote for his girlfriend. We didn't just write about f---ing drugs, its there, but it's an easy catchphrase and I find that that's kind of a drag sometimes living inside of that... But there are a lot of other subjects that we wrote about, and on this record there are a lot of subjects we brought to it. There's a lot to address, and from the time we stopped to where we are now, that's all on the record." More
OK, LeAnn Rimes, It’s Time to Admit You’re Kissy-Face with Eddie Cibrian July 24, 2009 – We’ve all had "hand in the cookie jar" moments. Mom walks in and we present her with some form of a smoking gun. We’re caught, that’s it, end of story right? Not really. Most of us will deny everything on first count. It’s human nature to deny. Hell, just for the fun of it, I deny ever writing this story.
A few months ago when LeAnn Rimes was caught all Kissy-face in a restaurant with Eddie Cibrian their individual reactions were interesting. Rimes’ ultimate statement was "This is a difficult time for me and my loved ones, but I appreciate all your continued support. I would like to assure all of you that this is a place for you to hear things directly from me and as you all know, not everything in our lives is always black and white." That was fair. When someone has a fling there’s always a deeper story involved. It’s important to note that she didn’t totally deny anything.
Eddie vehemently denied everything. His people released the following statement, "Other than being friends and two actors who were romantically intertwined in a movie-for-TV we filmed last fall, there is no truth to the reporting. It is a fabricated story that is using random snapshots as connective tissue to create a scandalous relationship." Huh? We all saw the video! More
Everyone's Pointing Fingers at Dr. Conrad Murray and Possible Jackson Family Civil Suit July 23, 2009 – I don’t think Michael Jackson’s doctor felt very secure yesterday. Fingers were being pointed at Dr. Conrad Murray. He was the last physician to look after the singer and things came to a head with dozens of police and U.S. federal agents armed with a search warrant ransacked his office.
Police are not saying much but their actions seem to point at the doctor as a suspect.
Officials were at Murray’s office for almost 3 hours yesterday.
Ed Chernoff, Murray's attorney, said, "The search warrant authorized law enforcement to search for and seize items, including documents, they believed constituted evidence of the offence of manslaughter.” Chernoff also said police and agents left with "a forensic image" of a computer hard drive and 21 documents.
The hard drive search could indicate that authorities are looking for a direct connection between Jackson, Murray and prescription drugs. More
Sony Pays $50 Million for Michael Jackson’s Final Footage July 23, 2009 – Even though multiple movie studios were bidding for the rehearsal footage to Michael Jackson’s O2 shows it looks like Sony has closed the deal. The Hollywood Reporter has said that Sony pictures paid AEG Live $50 million for the, over 80 hours, of footage.
Sony plans on releasing a feature film documentary on the final days of Jackson’s life and they are working fast with a reported release date of October 30th. Kenny Ortega, who most recently worked on the High School Musical films, is set to edit the film before his new Footloose (remake) project begins.
The films will include three completed videos that were going to run as interstitials during the concerts and possibly new film for the song “Thriller” which was filmed in 3D. More
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame To Celebrate 25th Anniversary with Bruce Springsteen, U2, Simon and Garfunkle and More July 23, 2009 – The body of work that is Rock and Roll encompasses so many actual genres. The Blues, Soul, Pop, Rock, Metal and the list goes on. Appropriately the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will feature a melting pot of everything under the sun including Bruce Springsteen, U2, Simon & Garfunkle, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Metallica.
The foundation will celebrate with two shows (October 29 and 30) at New York City's Madison Square Garden. This is one night when Metal will find a nice home with soul and it’ll all make sense. The Hall promises some interesting pairings including Crosby, Stills Nash & Friends and Simon and Garfunkle on stage with some surprising unlikely colleagues.
Whitney Houston Credits her Daughter For New Found Inspiration July 23, 2009 – Anyone with a 16 year old knows that care-giving for that age group is challenging. Whitney Houston takes it all in stride. After years being married to Bobby Brown I guess a sixteen year old daughter is nothing. Houston is making her Pop comeback with her upcoming album “I Look To You,” her first since 2002’s “Just Whitney.” The singer says one of her biggest fans is daughter Bobbi Kristina, who gave mom lots of confidence, "She was with me every step of the way, when I get discouraged and I get like 'this is tiring, this is wearing me out, I'm just not at that point', she'd just go 'no mom you can do this, get up, get up'."
She adds "I'm a lot wiser now, certainly a lot older. Things mean a lot more to me. I have a 16-year-old daughter, which makes a lot of changes in a woman's life. I think the songs themselves will speak to you when you hear them. And you'll understand where I am and the changes I've gone through for the better."
Whitney quickly got the courage to put it all together and the album is due in September. More
Sting Set to Release His New Album on October 27 July 23, 2009 - Sting will come back this fall with a new solo CD “If On a Winter’s Night” slated to be released on October 27.2009 on Deutsche Gramophon. The album was arranged and produced by Robert Sadin, who worked on Herbie Hancock’s Grammy-winning “Gershin’s World”. The forthcoming CD will be inspired by Sting’s favourite season and features two original compositions, a cover of traditional music of the British Isles, including traditional songs, carols and lullabies.
As Sting put it on his web site : “The theme of winter is rich in inspiration and material. By filtering all of these disparate styles into one album I hope we have created something refreshing and new.”
Sting’s original compositions include “Lullaby for an Anxious Child” and “The Hounds of Winter.” Both have been previously released (“Hound” is the opening track of his 1996 solo album “Mercury Falling”). Other tracks include the 14th century carol “Gabriel’s Message”, the traditional Newcastle ballad “The Snow it Melts the Soonest”. Henry Purcell’s “Now Winter Comes Slowly”, the English “begging” song “A Soalin” and an English reworking of Schubert’s “Der Leiermann” now called “Hurdy Gurdy Man”.More
Killers Brandon Flowers Very Upset over Poor Sales July 23, 2009 – The Killers lead singer Brandon Flowers has gone on record several times lamenting the fact that his band sells much more in the UK than in his home country of the U.S. Now he has more to bitch about. Flowers is upset that the bands latest album “Day and Age” sold a little more than half of what their last. “Sam’s Town” did. He’s also pissed that “Sam’s Town sold 2.5 million less than their debut album “Hot Fuss.”
He said: "How much does it bother me? I think about it every day. I've thought about it today. I've already talked about it today with my press officer." Flower adds, "If you look at us and you hear it, it's almost too good to be true. We have good songs, it sounds perfect, it sounds contrived, but it wasn't."
Wasn’t Flowers the brainiac who blamed his band’s lack of world domination on Led Zeppelin a few months ago? I’m sure that scored the group some points on that one. He said too many people are into classic rock and not open to new sounds. No, maybe they are buying Coldplay albums instead. More
Barbra Streisand Slated to Release “Love Is the Answer” on September 28th July 22, 2009 – It’s been a string of successful albums for Barbra Streisand - “Guilty” (1980), “Emotion” (1984), “Till I Loved You” (1988) or “Higher Ground” (1997) and that’s just a few of them. Now the multi-talented diva is set to release her highly awaited studio album, “Love Is the Answer” on September 28th on Columbia Records.
The new project “demonstrates a cabaret and jazz singer of emotional clarity, depth and maturity,” according to Columbia.
The famous vocalist, actress, director, writer, composer, producer and designer also has a new collaborator in Grammy Award-winning Canadian jazz pianist and vocalist Diana Krall. She is also working with her old pal, famous Grammy Award-winning song writer and producer Johnny Mandel. The pair worked together on “Back to Broadway” (1993) CD. He also arranged and co-produced Diana Krall’s Grammy winning album “When I Look in Your Eyes” (1998). More
B.B. King Sued by Former Manager July 21, 2009 – Did you know that B.B. King made a $100 million in the last decade? The Blues legend is known for his non-stop touring and huge popularity. According to King’s ex manager he is part of the reason for that wealth and he wants his fair share.
Floyd Leiberman has worked with King since 2000 and is suing for $1.5 million. He claims the guitarist simply didn’t pay him his due. The disclosure of King’s assets only came out after this lawsuit but who says the Blues don’t pay no cash? Of course B.B. King is one of a few exceptions in this format. He continually gets played on not only Blues and Jazz stations but some AC outlets still play “The Thrill is Gone.” Read More
Billy Corgan Talks about his Lone Existence in Smashing Pumpkins July 14, 2009 – Billy Corgan is blogging again, this time to explain why he is the only original member of Smashing Pumpkins left.
“The idea of identity is a strange one to tackle, For many years, I treated the idea of the band named The Smashing Pumpkins as an existential concept that existed away from my being and body. It was sort of 'over there', if you will. Jimmy leaving in 1996 made me deal quite heavily with the concept of loyalty to the 2 members who were left (James and D'arcy) as our relationships at that time were quickly drifting apart. And so on, and so forth, thru the different people coming and going. In the center of any of it has been for me, speaking personally, my music. Yes, MY music. The music that came out of this being and body. I've called the umbrella the songs came out under different names but to me I guess there really wasn't a whole lot of difference. As they say, a song is a song.”
Corgan says he loves things in the band now, even though it’s not a band..
“I've never been happier about being in SP, or a part of SP, than I am now. The music I am making sounds like The Smashing Pumpkins. It doesn't sound like solo work, I can assure you of that. …Its been a long journey to get back to where I started. There have been many sad days along the road, but honestly, these are really happy days. More
Lita Ford Explains Her Problem With Joan Jett – Her Manager Kenny Laguna July 14, 2009 – Lita Ford wants to make one thing clear, she has no problem with her former Runaway’s cohort Joan Jett, it’s her manager that drives her nuts. Ford told Rolling Stone magazine that she’s sad that her relationship with Jett has disintegrated thanks to Jett's manager, Kenny Laguna.
Ford has no input on the Runaways biopic “Cherry Bomb” thanks to the friction with Jett’s camp. She said, "I want people to know I have nothing to do with that film. Joan's manager offered to buy the right to my life story for a thousand bucks. I thought that was pretty disgusting. We never replied."
The guitarist says she has been at odds with Jett since 1985 because of Laguna, "He's managed to cause a war between us. This has been going on since 1985.
"So far I've kept my mouth shut. I don't know how somebody like him can spend so much time trying to destroy someone else's career. I don't know what the problem is with him - he really goes out of his way to fuck me up. I despise him for it. Joan and I have have done nothing to hurt each other. I've always loved Joan. There's a place in my heart for her that will always be there." More
Live’s Ed Kowalczyk Set for 8th Annual Layne Staley Tribute & Benefit Concert July 14, 2009 – As the world mourns Michael Jackson’s death we are reminded of the plethora of dead Rock stars that left us because of drugs. One of the biggies is Layne Staley. The former Alice in Chains lead singer died from years of heroin addiction. His disturbing decline led to the singer dying, by himself, in his apartment crouched over, the victim of one last speedball. Some say he lied there for two weeks before someone finally found him.
Staley was a huge part of the Seattle’s Grunge movement and on Aug 22 friends and fans will pay tribute to the singer. The eighth Annual Tribute & Benefit Concert will feature Live’s Ed Kowalczyk and Second Coming at Showbox Market in Seattle, Washington.
Each year the show is also a birthday celebration for Staley who would have been 42 on the day of the tribute show. Appropriately or ironically he was born during the “Summer of Love” in 1967. Organizers like to look at the event as a celebration of his life while dealing with the true issue that killed him.
As with previous years all proceeds and profits from silent auctions and merchandising will go to the Layne Staley Fund which helps people battling with drug abuse. More
Michael Jackson Comeback Was Set to Begin Today July 13, 2009 – It’s strange. Michael Jackson was set to begin his string of 50 UK shows today but instead here we are asking how his strange life unravelled out of control and who is responsible. Fans are gathering at the O2 arena for a huge vigil today. Here is the latest in this bizarre case.
TMZ is reporting that Michael’s doctor Arnold Klein has not always been so forthcoming with the singer’s medical records. L.A. County Coroner is still waiting for the doc to do his job and hand over all of Jackson’s history. They ran into the same problem during Jackson’s first child molestation case in 1993.
As for his child molestation case in 2005 court documents are showing that Jackson has a scary dependency on drugs. He was using several aliases to score drugs according to employees at the Neverland Ranch. Joey Jeszeck, a security official at the ranch, said he would frequently pick up the drugs.
The King of Pop also targeted dentists for his drugs. TMZ said “it was known in medical circles that Jackson used dentists to feed his habit.” More
